Mertigene Bell

August 17, 1922 ~ April 25, 2016 (age 93) 93 Years Old


CENTERTOWN

Born of Silas Noel Bell and Elizabeth  Imogene Kittinger Bell, Mertigene passed quietly In her sleep on Monday, April 25.
Mr. Silas, Miss Lizzie and sister Betty Jo Bell Nall welcome her at the bridge when she joins them. 
A graduate of the Kentucky Baptist Hospital nursing program, she joined the Army Nursing Corps as a LT on graduation. During her WW II Army career, she cared for Former President Ronald Reagan and Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the Green Briar.
She started with GE in 1958 as an Industrial Nurse. On retirement from GE (1986), she continued to care for her aging parents and became more active in her community
Mertigene is often quoted as saying that "it's sad to have lived and not made the world a better place" This quote, a philosophy she learned from her mother and grandmother, served as her motto as she taught EMT classes in the Tri-county area, was active in both the regions DAC and DAR chapters, Ohio County Hospital Auxiliary and RSVP. Continuing as a volunteer, she was active on the Green River Committee on Aging Board, she served on the TRIAD Board Of Directors for the GRADD area.  In Ohio County, she served on the Senior Ohio County Association Board of Directors and was instrumental in the building of the Ohio County Senior Center.
"  Volunteering is something you do because you want to not for the awards" Mertigene received the National Andrus Award and was named the #1 Volunteer in Kentucky by the AARP
Even in passing, Mertigene continues to influence with memories of her.  Celebrating  her  life. Services will be  5PM  Friday at Bevil Bros. in Beaver  Dam  with Bro George Darnell officiating. Burial will be in the Bell Cemetery, Matanzas. Visitation will be 4-8PM on Thursday and 2-5PM at the funeral home.
